by Sheila Ribeiro on Exhibition by Claudia Muller
Deborah Colker’s Dance Company celebrates its 20 years on the road with a show and 17 presentations in Santos and invites Claudia Muller to choreograph for the company on this occasion. Childhood friends in Rio de Janeiro, Muller and Colker followed the same way on different lanes: Colker is a national and international star of the movement beauty, Claudia is the muse of the performance in Dadaist style, a clear influence since her return from the residence at the Snow Judson Church School of Dance in New York.
Still not much known by the Brazilian public, Adriana Varejão does the scenography for Muller using an intense plasticity, rococo and picturesque, articulating narratives that inspire critics and the public to go beyond any cliché.
The show has a soundtrack especially composed by the Baiano musician Caetano Veloso, who is a fan of Muller’s. He has composed “Janelas (in)permeáveis” ((Un)pervious Windows) for the show, its lyrics quote her choreography and her hair locks:
eu quero você na minha (I want you to be into me
minha sereia my mermaid
vou te fisgar na minha I will fish you into me)
In exile in Brazil, the Chinese artist and ex-convict Ai Wei Wei, who participated with Assange in the Wikilieaks, made 14 big bronze heads that are placed around the city. According to the artist, the big heads entitled “Ren” (“Person” in Mandarim) symbolize the intelligence of the participating artists.
Edvan Monteiro and Vivienne Westwood, in their turn, sign the costume design that mixes Londoners’ and Cearences’ influences in red-balloon latex colors.
Ana Teixeira, ballerina, researcher and Professor at PUC/SP, considers that “the artists in ‘Janelas (in)permeáveis’ have, with no shadow of doubt, achieved excellence in the Neoclassic and Baroque esthetics”.
